Able Underachievers Able Underachievers  (Reference #P/ABL2WH)
Author - Diane Montgomery

Since the introduction of mass schooling educationalists have been concerned that large numbers of able children have underfunctioned. The introduction of grammar school education in 1944, for the top twenty percent did not overcome this problem. Equally comprehensive education did not resolve it and once again there is pressure to return to selection and 'acceleration'. This book however suggests a 'third way'. Whatever the structure used it advocates that the current curriculum needs to be taught differently so as to include all learners and to 'engage their brains' with the curriculum content. Evidence of what is needed and what works with able underachievers, the disaffected and low attainers from a wide range of backgrounds lies in the pedagogy used. It concludes that teaching and learning methods need to be modified to become learning orientated and learner centred rather than subject orientated and teacher centre. Education will then have 'come of age'.

Autism - From Theoretical Understanding to Educational Intervention  (Reference #P/AUT2WH)
Author: Theo Peeters

Autism is a condition which renders the sufferer incapable of understanding meaning 'beyond the information given'. The autistic person has a purely literal relationship with reality and has difficulty in developing imagination: "He panicked when he heard his mother say she wanted to cry her eyes out. If you kiss him and you ask him how it feels he may answer 'Wet'". Theo Peeters regards autistic people as 'hyperrealist' in a world of 'surrealism' that we call 'normal'. Paradoxically, it is lack of imagination that makes dealing with an absence of imagination so difficult. This book not only provides a theoretical understanding of the condition to help carers to adapt to the autistic person's way of thinking but also offers practical intervention strategies for education and treatment. The numerous quotes from parents and autistic people throughout the book provide particularly valuable insights.

Children's Pragmatic Communication Difficulties Children's Pragmatic Communication Difficulties  (Reference #P/CHI10WH)
Authors: Eeva Leinonen, Carolyn Letts & Benita Rae Smith

Communication problems in children that are best described as pragmatic in nature have been a focus of attention for some years. However, despite this, speech and language therapists, teachers and researchers still have some difficulty describing, defining and explaining such problems.

This book gives an up to date synthesis of work in the field of childhood pragmatic problems and provides both an introduction and more detailed consideration of this complex area. Aspects covered include conversational analysis, speech and communicative acts, reference, narrative, pragmatic comprehension and relevance. Each chapter contains exercises with discussion, notes on normal development and illustrative clinical data from children, as well as recent research in the area. This book provides a critical and informative account of what is currently known about children's pragmatic communication difficulties and how these difficulties can be described and explained. It should make an ideal book for both students and researchers of speech and language pathology, linguistics, psychology and education. It will also be of value to practising clinicians who would like updating and succinct access to research findings.

Clinician's Guide to Linguistic Profiling of Language Impairment (The)  (Reference #P/CLI2WH)
Author: Martin J Ball

Over the last i5 years there has been growth in the use of the linguistic profile in speech and language therapy clinics. While standardized psychometrically based assessment procedures use numerical scoring and selective elicitation procedures, the profile sets out to take a representative sample of the client's speech to detect and elucidate patterns of impaired and unimpaired linguistic abilities. The profile approach allow the clinician to detect directly the structures that need remediation and the norm-referenced developmental order in which this should be undertaken.|Some clinicians will need to be familiar with several profile approaches to assessment, and this book aims to provide a useful survey of the available profile packages detailing their application and comparing their usefulness as tools for the clinical appraisal of language use.

Cognitive Neuropsychology and Conversation Analysis in Aphasia Cognitive Neuropsychology and Conversation Analysis in Aphasia  (Reference #P/COG1WH)
Authors: Ruth Lesser and Lisa Perkins

Cognitive neuropsychology has made it possible to analyze individuals' language disorders through a psycholinguistic model and to quantify and evaluate the effects of intervention. The complementary methods of conversation analysis are also being introduced into assessment, with the potential for bringing a further structured approach to intervention.|This book introduces readers to both these systems through the study of actual clients with whom the authors and their colleagues have worked. It takes the form of a workbook, and readers are provided with information, stage by stage, and asked to form their own hypothesis before being given the author's own suggestions and results. The six cases used illustrate different disorders of language processing. The assessments are presented exactly as they occurred in clinical practice, and the authors use their deficiencies as a learning exercise to encourage readers to consider how they could have been improved, what further investigations are needed and what inferences for intervention can be drawn from them. Details of all the assessment materials used are provided, together with a simple method of evaluating the effectiveness of the proposed therapy.|The book should be of interest to speech and language therapists, clinical linguists, clinical psychologists and their students who wish to use these two systems in their work with aphasic clients.

Contents:

Introduction - background, evaluation, workshops on cognitive neuropsychological models, design of the workbook. Part 1 Applying cognitive neuropsychology: a psycholinguistic model of comprehending and producing words - auditory comprehension processes, assessing auditory comprehsnsion, semantics, assessing semantics, orthographic processes in reading, assessing reading, processes in spoken output, assessing spoken output, processes in written output, assessing written output; practice in applying the model; implications of cognitive neuropsychology for therapy for the impairment; cases. Communication Disorders in Childhood Cancer  (Reference #P/COM2WH)
Author: Bruce Murdoch

This is the first book to provide comprehensive coverage of the communication impairments that occur in association with the two most common forms of childhood cancer, namely leukaemia and brain tumour. Both of these conditions are described in terms of their epidemiology, diagnosis, aetiology, types, symptomatology, medical course and prognosis. In that speech and language disorders occurring in association with the two forms of cancer are largely the outcome of structural and functional changes in the brain caused by treatments applied to these conditions, particular attention is given to the treatment of leukaemia and brain tumour. Special emphasis is given to the effects of radiotherapy and chemotherapy on brain structure and function.

The speech and language disorders associated with childhood cancer are fully described with regard to their nature and occurrence. In addition, methods for assessing and treating communication problems in children with either leukaemia or brain tumour are recommended and described. Wherever necessary, the speech and language disorders are illustrated by reference to case examples. Factors contributing to the occurrence of communication impairments in children treated for cancer are discussed, for example CNS prophylaxis, age at treatment etc.

The book is aimed at practising and student health professionals involved with the assessment, treatment and management of children with neoplastic conditions. The text will be particularly useful for undergraduate and post graduate students undertaking degrees in either speech pathology or medicine.

The research relating to the efficacy of each approach is reviewed and the validity of the available evidence is examined. The unresolved ideological and political features of the debate are also discussed.|This book is addressed primarily to teachers of the deaf, student teachers of the deaf and parents of deaf children. It should also be useful to professionals such as speech therapists and educational psychologists who work with deaf children.

Developmental Speech Disorders  (Reference #P/DEV5WH)
Author: Pamela Grunwell

This book looks at the major changes that have occurred in the theory and practice of speech therapy for children with developmental speech disorders. It looks at current issues and their clinical implications, but the overall aim of the book is to set clinical practice firmly in a theoretical framework. While it is therefore essentially a practical book for practitioners, it also engages in the academic investigation of the nature of the different types of developmental speech disorders and their consequences for the children. This discussion provides the framework in which to consider clinical management and specific clinical techniques.|A recurrent theme throughout each chapter is the impact of linguistics upon our understanding and management of children's problems in learning to pronounce. There is no doubt that the linguistic revolution in speech and language pathology has produced an entirely new perspective on these disorders by identifying the phonological dimension of speech development.|Of equal importance is the expansion of knowledge about children's language development. Much more information is now available about phonological development in terms of what the developmental changes are and when they occur. This information is valuable in assessment and diagnosis. The book also includes a number of competing theories explaining how children develop their pronunciation patterns. These theories provide the premises upon which to establish a principled theory of therapy.|To reflect these issues and their clinical implications the book is divided into three sections. The first section explores the framework within which to discuss developmental speech disorders. The second section covers three specific types of pathological conditions with which developmental speech disorders are associated. The third section examines the problems of children who have no evident major disabling condition and yet they experience severe difficulties learning to pronounce and subsequently, more often than not, learning to read and write.

Part 1 Issues in speech development and speech disorders: processes of development and production, Nigel Hewlett; approaches to remediation, Janet Howell and Elspeth McCartney. Part 2 Speech disorders in children: cleft palate and orofacial abnormalites, Elizabeth Albery and Jane Russell; deaf children's phonological development, Ann Parker and Helen Rose; developmental neurological disorders, Nancy Milloy and Rosemarie Morgan-Barry. Part 3 Speech and language disorders in children: specific language learning difficulties, Fiona Gibbon and Pamela Grunwell; phonological deficits in developmental reading and spelling disorders, Joy Stackhouse.

Dyslexia: A Psychosocial Perspective Dyslexia: A Psychosocial Perspective   (Reference #P/DYS25WH)
Author: Morag Hunter-Carsch

At a time when 'dyslexia' is being redefined, this book proposes a social-interactive within the wider framework of 'specific learning difficulties'. The model proposed by Herrington and Hunter-Carsch is flanked by reflective contributions from internationally respected researchers, writers and teachers including Tim Miles, Hanna Poussu-Olli, Lindsay Peer, Peter Pumfrey and Gavid Reid. Each chapter carries messages for educators in all sectors of education. Teachers are challenged to re-examine central issues such as the relationship between 'within-person' and 'institutional' factors affecting learning in and beyond compulsory schooling: methods of teaching and provision of learning support; and the integration of meta-affectivity with metacognition.

Dyslexia - The Pattern of Difficulties (2nd Edition)  (Reference #P/DYS11WH)
Author: T R Miles

The first edition of this book was published in 1983. In it Professor Miles set out his ideas on dyslexia, indicating how they developed and showing how his dyslexia test - on which many of his conclusions were based - had evolved. Though the work published at that time was somewhat speculative, the Bangor Dyslexia Test is now well established and the material in this second edition of the book is backed by theoretical justification.|New chapters cover the many developments which have occurred over the past decade and bring the reader up-to-date with the latest research findings and conclusions. In addition to the many case studies drawn from UK experience, the book also includes supporting data from Greece, Germany and Japan. Written with the lay person in mind as well as the specialist, the use of technical jargon has been avoided wherever possible.

Background; assessment procedure; the dyslexia test; selection of subjects; sample case histories; the summary chart; control data; reading problems; spelling problems; confusion - between left and right, between east and west, between "b" and "d", over times and dates; recall of months of the year; subtractions and addition; reciting tables; recall of digits; additional evidence; improvement over time; familial incidence; handedness and eyedness; struggles over recognition; effects of diagnosis; some recent developments; theoretical basis for the Bangor Dyslexia Test; norms and validatory studies; further case studies.

Dyslexia and Effective Learning in Secondary and Tertiary Education Dyslexia and Effective Learning in Secondary and Tertiary Education  (Reference #P/DYS23WH)
Authors: Hunter-Carsch & Herrington

Recent policy initiatives illuminate the need for greater teacher awareness about dyslexia in secondary and tertiary education. Yet the debates about dyslexia are often narrowly based and can exclude some teachers. This book attempts to open up the debate by bringing together different ways of talking and thinking about dyslexia. Fundamental questions about how to respond to dyslexia in teaching and support contexts are addressed and the significance of 'exploratory conversions' between learners and tutors is recognised. The need to restructure 'the structured approach' and to consider meta-affectivity as well as metacognition is explored. The editors propose an underpinning cross sectoral model which integrates 'in person' dyslexia characteristics with social and contextual factors.

Practitioners in both secondary and tertiary sectors can gain ready access to contributions from internationally respected writers and teachers in the field including Nata Goulandris, Margaret Snowling and Stella ni Gallhoir Cotterell, Cynthia Klein, John Landon, Ellen Morgan, Rosemary Sage and Dorota Zdzienski. Alan Hurst's preface refers to "this important book" as paving the way to a more truly inclusive attitude and approach to education in and beyond compulsory schooling.

Dyslexia and Reading - A Neuropsychological Approach Dyslexia and Reading - A Neuropsychological Approach  (Reference #P/DYS26WH)
Author: Jean Robertson

Intended primarily for those people who are responsible for providing support for dyslexic students but also for research workers in this field, Jean Robertson's book begins with an overview of neuropsychological theory and brain function to help shed light on what is observed by teachers in their day-to-day interaction with students. The varied demands of the reading process are discussed and an overview is given of how neuropsychological theory can contribute to the development of specific intervention techniques.

The book then deals with both theoretical and practical considerations of dyslexia and reading. It discusses a developmental model of reading and the role the cerebral hemispheres play in the reading process, the visual and auditory aspects of reading and the development of intervention programmes. Subtypes of dyslexia are considered and examples given of how pupils are assessed and allocated to groups. Two different intervention methods are then discussed with case studies illustrating them and this section is followed by a discussion of experimental work from the two studies. The book concludes with a chapter on neuropsychological intervention, particularly in the school setting.

Give Sorrow Words - Working with a Dying Child Give Sorrow Words - Working with a Dying Child  (Reference #P/GIV1WH)
Author: Dorothy Judd

Though there has been much written about dying and bereavement in recent years, the particular stress of terminal illness in childhood - as it affects both the families and the professionals - is only beginning to be better understood. In this book Dorothy Judd, a child psychotherapist who has worked with ill, disabled and dying children and adolescents for many years, places her clinical experience in the context of a full understanding of death, the moral and ethical issues raised by some of the treatments for life-threatening illness, and the current research into new developments in approaches to terminal illness.|At the heart of the book is a very moving diary of Judd's work with Robert, a seven-year-old suffering from leukaemia. Judd's account of therapeutic work in the hospital setting, away from the privacy of the consulting room, will be of special interest to mental health professionals.|"Give Sorrow to Words" combines great sensitivity to the experience of terminal illness with an astute awareness of the more theoretical debates in this increasingly important area of research. First published in 1989, this 2nd edition has been updated and revised.

Hypnosis in Europe  (Reference #P/HYP1WH)
Authors: Peter Hawkins & Michael Heap

Since the 1950s there has been an upsurge of interest and activity in the field of hypnosis amongst academic and applied psychologists, medical practitioners, dentists and other health service professionals, as well as the public at large. There is evidence of the increasing routine use of hypnosis by professionals in Europe, North America and Australasia, and interest is also being shown in South Africa and Japan.|The numerous developments in the field have brought to a head issues concerning the legal and professional regulation of hypnosis. Should the use of hypnosis be restricted to certain professionals and, if so, what kind of training should practitioners of hynosis undergo? What, if anything, should be done about the use of hypnosis for entertainment? Some countires have had laws for some time regulating the professional use of hypnosis, others are considering such regulations. According to the rationale and with what purposes in mind are these rules devised? And what determines a restrictive or a permissive attitude to the practice of hypnosis?|With hypnosis in Europe at a significant and eventful period in its evolution, this book provides an overview of what has happened before, what is happening now and in what direction ideas and practices are heading. This single volume aims to enable the professionals to bring themselves up-to-date with the current scene in Europe and the implications for the evolution of hypnosis worldwide.
